STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

Responsibilities:

The School Nurse will communicate with the parents and Dunseith Day School staff concerning a child's health problems, encourage parental involvement in prevention and treatment to health problems, etc. Parents must be notified concerning emergency matters or serious health issues, and encouraged to accompany the child for appointments. The School Nurse will maintain an accurate health file on each student, keep a daily log of students that includes time, date, symptoms, reason for coming to the health office and which treatment was given if any. The School Nurse will do vision screening and assist students in obtaining eye glasses. The School Nurse will administer prescribed medication to student as needed and attend to students' individual needs as the students come in to the health office. The School Nurse will work closely with Indian Health Service (IHS) officials in emergency and every day health problems of students (clinic and dental care), order supplies, send clinic referrals, and maintain up-to-date immunization records, and set up health and dental screening for students. The School Nurse will pick up student prescriptions if and when needed.

At Level 02 School Nurse will work under close supervision and technical assistance of a physician or registered nurse at a nearby Indian Health Service medical facility on a regular and recurring basis.

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Level 02 Practical School Nurse: Successful completion of a 2-year Associate Degree in practical nursing program with License and 2 years experience.

The education requirement for School Nurse requires a degree or diploma from a practical nursing program for practical nurses approved by the legally designated State-accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment. No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters is required, glasses permitted. The ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required. In most instances, an amputation of arm, hand, leg, or foot will not disqualify an applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis. In addition, the applicant must have emotional and mental stability.

SPECIAL REFERENCE:

Applicant is subject to a favorable background investigation. This is a Non-Critical Moderate Risk Position subject to a favorable adjudicated background investigation.
Subject to a probationary period for equivalent to two (2) academic semesters, which may be extended.
The incumbent is required to drive a motor vehicle to conduct business at field locations. You MUST submit a current GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record for full consideration. Incumbent must possess a valid state driver’s license.
