STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

The school janitor performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks in the cleaning and maintenance of the school’s buildings, office, gymnasium and cafeteria. This position assists in providing a safe, clean learning environment for students and faculty staff. The work involves the full range of janitorial services. Major duties and responsibilities include:
• Sweeps, mops, steam cleans, waxes, polishes, and buffs floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets and rugs; cleans and dusts furniture, woodwork, etc.; washes walls and partitions, venetian blinds and windows; washes and cleans ceiling vents and fixtures; cleans mirrors and water fountains; and performs other related custodial work.
• Makes note of condition of facilities, and reports to the Principal those items needing specialized maintenance and repairs such as broken windows, damaged electrical outlets, frayed cords, clogged drains, and other conditions requiring maintenance.
• Maintains, adjusts, cleans, and oils machinery and equipment used. Changes or replaces brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachments as needed.
• Empties trash cans and relines cans with liners. Collects and disposes of trash including the transport of trash to proper disposal areas.
• Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies, cleans spills, cleans drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, etc.
• Changes light bulbs and fluorescent tubes as necessary.
• Moves heavy objects, furniture, supplies and equipment.
• Picks up litter from around buildings and grounds.
• Keeps parking lots and surrounding areas clean of all debris and litter.
• Performs seasonal tasks such as applying salt or other ice control material, and operating snow blower or uses shovels to remove snow and ice from walkways, entry ways, and drive ways.
• Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
• Ensures that appropriate and necessary levels of inventory are on hand at assigned areas, orders necessary supplies and materials, and maintains accurate records of received and distributed items.
• Maintains awareness of buildings, equipment, supplies and material security at all time in assigned area; reports security breaches or safety problems to the Supervisor.
• Practices required and regularly accepted safety/sanitation precautions while performing cleaning and maintenance duties (i.e., safe use and storage of cleaning chemicals, using ladders for climbing, controlling cords or equipment so they are not trip/fall hazards, etc.).
• Review material data safety sheets, and complies with safety requirements on the data sheets; posts those data sheets near where chemicals are stored.

INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY:

Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472). SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma or GED is required.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The incumbent is required to operate a US Government-owned or leased motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.

The incumbent is required to possess a valid state driver’s licenses and qualify for/maintain Bureau of Indian Affairs Motor Vehicle Operators Authorization.

A valid State Driver's license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do may result in removal from the position.

On rare occasion, incumbent may be required to travel away from the duty station for training purposes. Travel may involve transit via airplane and motor vehicle.

Occasionally, the employee is expected to work other than normal hours as necessary to handle emergency situations or peak workloads. Incumbent may also be required to report to work in early morning hours to shovel snow or de-ice in cases of extreme weather conditions. In rare situations reporting to work in inclement weather may be required.

The incumbent is subject to background investigations.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be able to lift over 50 pounds and be in excellent physical condition. Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required, except that some positions may be suitable for persons who are blind or deaf. Good hand and foot coordination required. In most instances, an amputation of an arm, hand, leg or foot will not disqualify an applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated for by use of a satisfactory prosthesis.

An annual physical is required. May be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment.

Most work is indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, lights, and ventilation. Is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions. Subject to injuries when working on ladders and operating heavy equipment.

SPECIAL REFERENCE:
