STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

The Librarian will be involved in work that primarily requires professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and techniques of librarianship. An inherent requirement of these positions is a knowledge of literature resources. Such work will be concerned with the collection, organization, preservation, and retrieval of recorded knowledge in printed, written, audio-visual, film, wax, near-printed methods, magnetic type, or other media. Library functions will include one or more of the following: selection, acquisition, cataloging and classification of materials, bibliographic and reader’s advisory services, reference and literature searching services, library management and systems planning, or the development and strengthening of library service. Some positions may involve work in connection with the development of information retrieval systems.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education: BS/BA including or supplemented by 12 semester hours in Library Science
Experience: None

All professional educators will meet the certification standards for the position in the State where the position is located. Emergency and provisional certificates may be accepted under the conditions they are issued by the State certification authority.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Term - 3 years NTE/may be extended up to 1 year

You will be offered a term appointment not-to-exceed three (3) years, which may be extended one (1) contract year based on workload requirements and/or program funding.

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 3 contract years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (not more than 3). Term employees may be are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be converted to school year or year long contract without further competition.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required for most positions; however, some positions may be suitable for the deaf. In most instances, an amputation of arm, hand, leg or foot will not disqualify an applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis. In addition, applicants must have mental and emotional stability.

SPECIAL REFERENCE:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position. 
  • Applicant is subject to a favorable background investigation. This is a Non-Critical Moderate Risk Position subject to a favorable adjudicated background investigation.
  • Subject to a probationary period for equivalent to two (2) academic semesters, which may be extended. 
  • The incumbent is required to drive a motor vehicle to conduct business at field locations. You MUST submit a current GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record for full consideration. Incumbent must possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • All male applicants born after December 31, 1959, will be required to complete the certification document to confirm their selective service status. 
  • Government Housing is NOT available. 
  • Relocation expenses WILL NOT be paid.
