STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY:

Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472). Verification Form BIA-4432 must be submitted with the application if claiming Indian Preference. Consideration will be given to Non-Indian applicants in the absence of qualified Indian Preference eligible.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Education Technician will provide personal visits (usually in the home) with primary care providers of children prenatal to 5 years of age, using the Parents as Teachers Foundational Curriculum and Foundational 2 (3 through Kindergarten). They also provide screenings, FACE Family Circles, and resource networking. It is a multi-faceted, demanding position.

This position will perform duties on a paraprofessional level in support of professional educators. This person may operate outside the classroom in a specialized area where he/she develops a particular skill or performs independent work requiring application of specialized or technical knowledge and skill in restricted phases of a particular education area under direction of the professional educator. This position includes actual participation with the planning of instruction, preparing lesson plans, and doing independent teaching under the close supervision of a professional educator.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Associates Degree or higher or 60 hours of study from an accredited institution of higher education.

Experience: 1 year, experience should be in the same line of work or one which is basically similar to the education position the employee is being placed in.

Substitution: Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent degree meets basic requirements without experience.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

A valid State Driver’s license is a prerequisite, as the position requires operation of a motor vehicle in performance of work. The work requires transporting students or conducting other assigned official business throughout the geographic area of the school compound. A valid State Driver’s license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so may result in removal from the position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Good vision and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters is required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required, in most instances an amputation of arm, hand, leg, or foot will not disqualify an applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by satisfactory prosthesis. In addition, applicants must have mental and emotional stability.

Occasionally, incumbent may be required to travel for training purposes or attend meetings from the duty station.
