This School Kitchen Helper assists School Cooks by performing non-cooking and light cooking duties. This includes loading and putting away food deliveries, rotating stock, cleaning and sanitation of entire food service facility, loading and unloading dish washers, mixing chemicals for cleaning, setting up serving lines, preparing food items prior to cooking, washing pots and pans, serving food to students, monitoring students assisting in serving, monitoring students’ behavior in the cafeteria, gathering and measuring ingredients prior to cooking, setting up condiments, and simple cooking duties. Cleans floors, tables, equipment, and utensils. Unloads and stacks food delivery items, unloads and stores clean dishes, sets up serving line, refills condiments containers, prepares sack lunches, serves food. Makes sandwiches, cuts up salad items, retrieves food ingredients specified in menus and recipes, rotates food, and other supplies, measures chemicals for cleaning. Operates dishwashers, hand washes pots and pans. May supervise students assisting in any of these activities. May be assigned to monitor student behavior while in the cafeteria.

High school diploma or GED is required. Required to hold a Food Handlers Certificate (or equivalent authorization) valid for the state where employed. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
A valid state driver’s license may be required for some positions and must be maintained when required.

You will be offered a term appointment not-to-exceed two (2) years, which may be extended one (1) contract year based on workload requirements and/or program funding.
NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 2 contract years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 2). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be converted to school year or year long contract without further competition.
Applicants must be able to lift over 50 pounds and be in excellent physical condition. Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required except that some positions may be suitable for persons who are blind or deaf. In most instances, and amputation of arm, hand, leg or foot will not disqualify and applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis.
An annual physical examination is required. Incumbents may be required to wear personal protective equipment as necessary.
The Investigative Process for Public Trust Positions: Background investigations for public trust positions are conducted to gather information to determine whether applicants are reliable, trustworthy, of good conduct and character, and loyal to the U.S. The information that provided on the Questionnaire for Public Trust Positions (SF-85P) and the Declaration for Federal Employment (OF 306) may be confirmed during the investigation. The investigation may extend beyond the time covered by this form, when necessary to resolve issues.
The applicant's current employer may be contacted as part of the investigation, although the applicant may have previously indicated on applications or other forms that the applicant did not want the current employer to be contacted. If the applicant has a security freeze on their consumer or credit report file, then the agency may not be able to complete the investigation, which can adversely affect the applicant's eligibility for a public trust position or the ability to obtain Federal or contract employment. To avoid such delays, the applicant must request that the consumer reporting agencies lift the freeze in these instances.
In addition to the questions on the SF-85P, inquiry also is made about the applicant's adherence to security requirements, the applicant honesty and integrity, falsification, misrepresentation, and any other behavior, activities, or associations that tend to demonstrate a person is not reliable, trustworthy, or loyal.
After a suitability /fitness determination is made, the applicant may also be subject to continuous vetting which may include periodic reinvestigations to ensure the employee is continuing suitability for employment.
