Academic programs (including SPED)

Sherman Indian HS offers a number of Academic programs for our students:

  • AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination): this is a college prep program for 10th – 12th graders who want to attend college after high school. The program is not meant for the top-grade earners, rather for those who are in the “middle of the road” and need a little extra help to get their grades up and accepted into college. AVID focuses on being college ready, including taking higher level and challenging courses, applying for college and scholarships, completing FAFSA, and preparing students to be successful in their post-secondary educational endeavors.
  • Cultural Educational Opportunities: Sherman offers both Native Studies (9th grade) and Tribal Government (12th grade) courses. Our Cultural and Traditional Leader also provides coursework in Museum Studies, where our students help run and maintain our on-campus museum.
  • CTE Pathways: This is a career education opportunity for students who are interested in one of the following fields: Culinary, Health Careers, Plant Science, Animal Science, Public Safety, Construction, Automotive/Electricity, or Computers. Each Pathway culminates with an internship in the field of study.
  • A – g courses: a – g courses are courses approved by the Regents of the University of California. If a student wants to attend a UC after high school, they will need to complete their a – g requirements. Sherman offers several courses in each category to help our students meet their a – g requirements.
  • Special Education: The Special Education department provides full implementation of all current and transfer IEPs. Class offerings include SDC, RSP, and inclusion classes to meet varied needs of our learners. The Special Education department also works closely with our Pathways program to write relevant transition plans for our Special Education students that can be implemented in their home communities.
  • EAOP (Early Academic Outreach Program): The academic counselors work with our students and UC Riverside to identify students who are eligible for this program. The program is designed to help students with both their coursework and admission to UC Riverside (or any other UC).
  • FAFSA/Application/Scholarship Workshops: The academic counselors also offer day, evening, and weekend workshops for our students to help them fill out their college applications, FAFSA, and scholarship applications. Flyers and announcements are made notifying students when the workshops will be held.
  • We also have partnerships with Riverside Community College and California Indian Nations College that allow our students dual enrollment so they can begin taking college courses while still in high school
  • Sherman also offers educational opportunities for Gifted and Talented, Bilingual, and 504 support if needed.

Extra-curricular including interscholastic sports

Sherman offers the following sports:

  • Boys
    • Football
    • Cross Country
    • Basketball (JV and Varsity)

Clubs: Sherman offers a number of club opportunities for our students as well. Each dorm forms their own club so they can fundraise for dorm trips. Other clubs we have had in past years include Crochet Club and G-Team (Environmental). If there are clubs that students would like to start, they can ask a staff member to sponsor it.

Annual Pow-Wow is held on the third Saturday in April. The Sherman Pow-Wow will return fully in April 2023.

Ms. Sherman Pageant: this annual event is held during the week of Pow-Wow, where our young women vie for the title of Ms. Sherman. Ms. Sherman is our school ambassador, and will represent our school at off-campus events both locally and out-of-state.

Support services (academic and mental/behavioral health)

There is an Indian Health Services (IHS) Clinic located in the main academics building. The Clinic staff provide primary care and behavioral health care to students enrolled at Sherman Indian High School during school hours. A board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner, a caring Registered Nurse, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and a Medical Support Assistant provide care in a relaxed, quiet atmosphere. Students are guided toward healing by holistic medical and behavioral health care, rehabilitation, and prevention services. In some cases, a student’s health needs exceed the limits of the Clinic. In these situations, care may be referred to a local specialist or a student may be placed on Health/Medical Leave.

After school hours, there is one Homeliving Counseling Tech. The Counseling Tech works with students on dealing with issues such as homesickness, grief, substance abuse, and personal decision making. We are also in the process of hiring a second Counseling Tech.

Residential Program including evening and weekend programming and student placement/room assignments, especially the younger grades.

The residential program has a set after school and weekend schedule that is flexible should there be a special event. Students have access to the Recreation Center, Clarke Cultural Center, the gym, the weight room, off campus trips (for supplies), field trips, tutoring, and dorm activities. The goal of the Homeliving program is to give students the opportunity to grow socially, physically, and culturally, in a safe and secure learning environment that focuses on student retention.

Dorm placement is based on grade level and gender. Dorm Managers make individual room placement decisions. Currently we have 4 fully operational dorms, 2 boys and 2 girls. All 4 may be in use for the upcoming school year if staffing permits.
