Recognizing that safety is multifaceted and a top priority, the BIE Navajo School District has proactively worked to cultivate a positive culture and climate, build community, ensure emergency preparedness, and maintain a secure environment. From June 24–26, 2026, at Wingate High School in Ft. Wingate, New Mexico, the district hosted a successful, hands‑on Community Emergency Response Team Training for Bureau-funded schools. Twenty-six staff members from 11 Navajo BIE schools took part in three days of practical, scenario-based emergency preparedness instruction.
The training was led by expert instructors from the McKinley County and Navajo Nation Office of Emergency Management and the City of Gallup Fire Department, who guided school administrators, security personnel, and facilities staff through essential emergency response skills. The goal was to strengthen school readiness, improve team coordination, and better equip school employees to protect students and staff during emergencies.
CERT is a nationally recognized program designed to educate school staff and community members on disaster preparedness. Over the course of the training, participants engaged in sessions covering fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, and team organization, as well as hands‑on activities such as fire extinguisher practice, victim triage, basic first aid, and coordinated team response exercises. These interactive sessions provided staff with opportunities to safely practice high‑stakes skills, strengthen communication under pressure, and better understand their roles and responsibilities during emergency incidents.
The CERT training directly supports the Bureau of Indian Education’s Strategic Direction by fostering safer learning environments, building school capacity, and expanding emergency preparedness across the Navajo region. Participants reported increased confidence in their ability to respond quickly and effectively, support one another during crises, and assist students until first responders arrive. The training also served as a celebration of cross‑school collaboration while strengthening safety, readiness, and resilience throughout tribal communities.
