Riding the school bus is a privilege enjoyed by many Bureau of Indian Education students. School Bus Safety Week reminds motorists and passengers alike to help keep trips to and from school safe. BIE bus drivers prioritize the health and well-being of all students.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, less than 1% of traffic fatalities involve children on buses. While buses are among the safest vehicles on the road, the greatest risk occurs when students board or exit.

Important Safety Rules

Motorists:

  • Stay alert around a bus that has stopped or pulled over. Children often cross the street when boarding or exiting the bus.
  • It is illegal to pass a school bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing. Stay stopped until the bus moves again.
  • Be alert when driving in neighborhoods during the morning and mid-afternoon.
  • Avoid using cell phones while driving.

Bus Passengers:

  • Play it SAFE when getting on and off the bus:
    • Stay at least 10 feet — five giant steps — away from the curb.
    • Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
    • Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
    • Exit the bus after it comes to a full stop and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.
  • While on the bus:
    • Do not roughhouse.
    • Always follow the bus driver’s instructions.
    • Stay seated while the bus is in motion.
    • Keep the aisle and exits clear.
    • Keep hands, arms, and other body parts inside the bus.
    • Do not distract the bus driver.
