The Bureau of Indian Education is sharing an update regarding Behavioral Health and Wellness Services.
The Bureau of Indian Education remains committed to the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff. Beginning in February 2026, the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program contract, including the BHWP call line, on-site crisis support, and virtual telehealth services, will conclude.
As part of the BIE Strategic Direction, BIE will move toward implementing a comprehensive wellness framework that includes students' physical, mental, emotional, cultural, safety, and social needs.
Schools will continue to receive:
- Behavioral health training and technical assistance
- Support identifying local, tribal, and federal behavioral health resources
- Ongoing coordination with partners, including the Indian Health Service and tribal health providers
If a student, employee, or community member needs immediate help, free and confidential support is available 24/7 through the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or the Crisis Text Line by texting NATIVE to 741741 to connect with a trained Crisis Counselor.
Additionally, the Department of the Interior Employee Assistance Program offers professional, confidential counseling and consultation that can help employees and their families resolve life challenges. These valuable services are available at no cost to DOI employees and eligible family members. For more information, visit the DOI EAP webpage.
The Bureau of Indian Education continues its comprehensive approach to student success that reflects the full range of students' needs, with student safety and well-being as the center of this work.
