The Special Education Program is housed in the BIE Division of Performance and Accountability. The Special Education Program plays a role in helping Education Resource Centers and Schools achieve Results-Driven Accountability for special education programs in Bureau-operated, Tribally Controlled, and Navajo schools throughout the country. The BIE is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
The Bureau of Indian Education supports educational opportunities for more than 400,000 American Indian and Alaska Native students across the United States through a comprehensive system of direct services and funding programs spanning early childhood to postsecondary education.

Cybersecurity is a public good that is strongest when the public is given the ability to contribute. A key component to receiving cybersecurity help from the public is to establish a formal policy that describes the activities that can be undertaken in order to find and report vulnerabilities in a legally authorized manner. Such policies enable federal agencies to remediate vulnerabilities before they can be exploited by an adversary – to immense public benefit.
The Bureau of Indian Education was invited to present in the Community of Practice topic for "Family Engagement" as Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Schools was noteworthy in implementing the local literacy plan while successfully embedding the Native Ojibwe language and culture with the participation of the family and community.
Assessments and Accountability
Integrated Content and Assessments ensure broad access to accurate and timely student and school level information which is used for educational decision making. The use of this information also provides high quality technical assistance and professional development to school and department personnel. This also ensures that policies, procedures, and decisions support a high performing and accountable education system.
